Audition song suggestions for the character Princeton (baritone)
Princeton is our fresh-faced protagonist and the newest resident to the bustling neighborhood of Avenue Q. He is starting his adult journey with a B.A. in English, but the real-life lessons are coming his way. This character goes from blissful naivety to rock bottom and must be a skilled puppeteer. This actor doubles as Rod.
“The Kite” from You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Audition song suggestions for the character Rod (baritone)
Rod is a compelling character because he is seemingly full of contradictions. Although he is a successful investment banker, he struggles in his personal life. While being highly principled and a staunch Republican, but also except his often opposed sexuality. He has a major crush on his roommate Nicky, even though he abhors his living style. Rod spends much of the play finding room to accept ALL of himself, and in turn, learns to accept others. The same actor Usually plays this character as Princeton, also a puppet.
“Never Getting Rid of Me” from Waitress
“My Unfortunate Erection (Chip’s Lament)” from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Audition song suggestions for the character Kate Monster (soprano)
Kate Monster is a profoundly caring, fiercely loyal monster. She is ambitious, though her position as an “assistant” kindergarten teacher may not reflect it. She crushes on Princeton, but his growing pains cause her dismay, as she is a perfectionist and has been independent longer than him. Kate Monster is a puppet.
“Times Like This” from Lucky Stiff
Audition song suggestions for the character Lucy (alto)
Lucy is the headliner at the local nightclub who seduces Princeton, much to Kate Monster’s chagrin. She is self-involved and usually gets what she wants. Can be seen in “Girls Gone Wild: Parts 2, 5, and 7.” Played by the same actor as Kate Monster, using a different puppet.
“Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets)” from Damn Yankees
Audition song suggestions for the character Nicky (tenor)
Nicky is Rod’s roommate and another resident of Avenue Q. A friendly guy, but as a roommate, Nicky is sluggish and unkempt. Their relationship is strained when Nicky, who is a heterosexual, believes Rod has feelings for him. This actor uses multiple puppets also to play Trekkie Monster and the Bad Idea Bear.
“I’m Not That Smart” from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Audition song suggestions for the character Trekkie Monster (baritone)
Trekkie Monster is a puppet whose only description can be a Cookie Monster gone rogue. Trekkie sings a whole song about his love for internet porn and lives a bit like a recluse. He does have a gentle side, which he shows when he supports Kate Monster’s school for little monsters. This actor also plays Nicky and Bad Idea Bear and must be comfortable singing in a growl.
“Magic Foot” from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Audition song suggestions for the character Brian (baritone)
One of our few human characters, Brian is Christmas Eve’s husband and one of the less prolific residents of Avenue Q. Brian is good-natured and easy-going to a fault, landing himself in years of unemployment. He never reached his dream of becoming a late-night TV comedian.
“Man” from The Full Monty
Audition song suggestions for the character Christmas Eve (soprano)
Christmas Eve’s two master’s degrees and career as a therapist make her one of the shining stars of Avenue Q– except that she can’t keep any clients. Perhaps because she is as blunt and unknowingly offensive to them, much like she is with her unemployed husband, Brian. Christmas Eve immigrated from Japan, and the actor’s dialect must be strong and convincing.
“Find Your Grail” from Spamalot
Audition song suggestions for the character Gary Coleman (alto)
Gary Coleman is the proud superintendent of the apartment building in which all of our characters live. He was the child star you may remember from “Diff’rent Strokes,” although in Avenue Q, he is grown up, a little washed out, and with not a lot to show for his former fame except a public personal life. This role can be gender-fluid.
“That’s Rich” from Newsies
“Brand New You” from 13 the Musical
